Really quite an honor to have my new film Time Washes Over Us in the traveling show Down North that just opened! Co-organized by the Portland Museum of Art, the Reykjavík Art Museum, Iceland, and the Bildmuseet, Sweden, the North Atlantic Triennial is the first exhibition devoted entirely to contemporary art of the North Atlantic region. A massive thanks to curators Jaime DeSimone, Anders Jansson, and Markús Þór Andrésson.

Prima Clavis (The first key) is inspired by The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine - a widely reproduced alchemical book first published in 1599 by Johann Thölde. The keys use allegorically enhanced images to reveal the production of the Philosopher’s Stone, a mystical substance capable of turning base metals into gold or silver. It is through transformation, be it in folklore, alchemy, metallurgy, psychedelia, or spirituality, that the root of storytelling and myth begins. With each step in the process, the symbolic fashions conceal a way toward illumination. Only a knowledgeable reader or alchemical practitioner can be expected to correctly interpret this veiled language.
In comparative mythology, the Masks of God, as referred to by Joseph Campbell and Lowry Burgess, refers to the deities of the various mythological systems, whether Zeus, Indra, Isis, Yahweh, the trickster, etc, are all manifestations of a divine and transcendent source of being - that which is beyond thought and conception, beyond the personality of the self. This transparency leads to transformation, opening up radiance behind the mask. A conduit to the soul.
This channeling of energies is revealed through the body as a vessel, an iron cupola, a kiln, a mold, for material investment, flowing metal–magma–light, creation, and recreation through transformation. The body and its many masks, transcend the individual towards a space of mutable ceremony. Eventually, the individual disappears. A supportive setting can provide profound mystical experiences. Experiences such as unity, transcendence of time and space, a sense of insight into the ultimate nature of reality, feelings of ineffability, sublimity, and profound emotions such as joy, peace, and love. This is primal and human.
The Hand of Sabazius inspires the hand on the shoulder. It is a sacred symbol of the deity of fertility and vegetation who was worshipped alongside other gods—particularly Zeus and Dionysus, the god of wine. The hand on the back, the reaffirming sense of being secure.
Through many iterations and conversations, we have come up with ‘the first key’ for your brain to conjure meaning and for your distinguished fashion sensibilities to be enhanced.

I am extremely excited about receiving The Sprout Fund - Seed Award for a fantastic community project I am collaborating on with The Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area and The Penn State Master Gardener program called "The Iron Garden Walk". On October 25, 2014 I will be leading an iron pour to cast interpretive plaques for the Carrie Furnaces site in Rankin, PA highlighting the native plant species that have grown on the site of the impressive old iron blast furnaces. The Penn State Master Gardeners have been surveying the site over the summer and my wife Addy Smith-Reiman has been designing the plaques that will be poured. Very exciting project to be a part of. Thanks to the Rivers of Steel, DCNR and the Sprout Fund for their generous support.

Can't Stop Reiman is a selected survey exhibition of sculptural and video work by Joshua Reiman, from 1998 to the present. Reiman has previously exhibited in Buffalo in 2010, as part of the regional
survey project Beyond/In Western New York 2010: Alternating Currents. On that occasion, Reiman exhibited a new 4-channel work at the Albright Knox Art Gallery. For this exhibition, co-curators
John Massier (of Hallwalls) and Cori Wolff (from Buffalo Arts Studio) are revisiting works first encountered during a 2009 studio visit with the artist.
While many works often include performance elements—particularly with the artist or others performing for the camera—Reiman's finished works are compelling visual dissertations that collapse numerous ideas into images and objects that can be said (like his Arctic explorer character featured in the Albright installation) to be searching for varying tangents of The Sublime. Popular culture, history, colonialism, heroism, rock and roll, and modern art all collapse into a boyish and exuberant exploration of identity, manhood, and cultural meaning. As such, Can't Stop Reiman will touch upon all these tangents and the characters inhabiting the exhibition will range from George Washington and his Revolutionary Army, reconceived as a contemporary basketball team; Blackbeard and his pirate dreams; Michael Jackson Pollock, the hypothetical progeny of distinct superstars; David Lee Roth(ko); and the spirit of Joseph Beuys encapsulated in a 1963 Chevy Impala. Amid the overt regurgitation of popular culture, Reiman often finds space for subtle and often poignant reflection, as in The People, a Super 8 film in which a Native American actor dreams of being caught in a web of stereotypes until he emerges in a Washington Redskins uniform to roam the Plains. It is a work as subtle as much as other works are bright and full of surface bling.
Joshua Reiman is a trans-disciplinary artist working simultaneously in sculpture, film, video, and photography. His work has been shown in galleries and museums across the United States, and has been included in group shows in Germany and Estonia. He has been an artist in residence at SIM Reykjavik, Iceland, The Ucross Foundation, The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Skulpturen Park Berlin, and the 7 Below Arts Initiative to name a few. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Art New England, The Kansas City Star, The Buffalo News, 7 Days Vermont, and various other newspapers and blogs. He received an MFA from Syracuse University and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Josh is currently a visiting faculty member at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA.

THE EXHIBITION:
Fishing from the Beach is the result of a collaboration between the Syracuse University MFA programs in Art and Transmedia and the MA program at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. In Winter 2011, Syracuse MFA graduate students sought to establish a working relationship with curators at a similar stage of professional development. After approaching CCS Bard with a proposal, a call was put out to interested MA students and the team of four curators was selected for the project. Over the course of spring and summer 2011, Janine Armin, Rachel Cook, Suzy Halajian, and Leora Morinis conducted a series of studio visits in Syracuse and a formed curatorial vision for the exhibition at Dumbo Arts Center. - Photographs from The People will be on view as part of a curated group show of Syracuse Alumni (2011) at The Dumbo Art Center in Brooklyn. NY from November 14th- 21th with the opening on Thursday November 17th in the evening. More info to come.

Raise your fists and shout at the devil, as brothers Justin and Jacob Gibbens have amassed a visual onslaught of righteous work by artists who reverently and joyfully tip their hats and bang their heads to an often marginalized and misunderstood subculture: the culture of Heavy Metal. Culled from around the globe, these artists utilize the iconic and bountiful visual language of all genres of heavy rock music in wondrous and oh so clever ways. Prepare to have your ass kicked and your spandex split, because we're turning the knob to eleven on this one.
Jacob and Justin, spawn of two loving and nurturing parents (Lois and Merle Gibbens), were reared in a healthy, supportive environment, grew up as typical honor roll kids, and can both more or less function normally and productively in society. Yet, since their youth, they’ve been self-described metal heads. Jacob’s all-time favorite band is AC/DC. If Justin were honest, he’d tell you that Metallica is his, fully realizing the shame and regret that holding this opinion elicits.

- I am currently working on a new project that deals with Native American stereotypes. This should prove to be a very interesting film and photographic series. Stay tuned........?

- I will be speaking at the University of Cincinnati in the first week of April as well as visiting St. Louis and Kansas City, MO. Then to the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming for the rest of April!
- Great News, My wife Addy, was accepted to the Landscape Architecture Program at Cornell University for a dual degree with City and Regional Planning. I am so proud and excited for her!
- I will be putting out two books later this year with introductory essays by Stefan Osdene from the University of Wisconsin, and Ruth Erickson from the University of Pennsylvania. This is a very cool project and I thank them for their contributions.
- I am pleased to announce the forthcoming documentary by Kristen Smoragiewicz of Burlington, VT, about my 2007 project, As History Happens. It should be ready later this year. This project will be a half an hour film with music composed by Vermont musician, Greg Davis. More info to come! Thanks Kristen.

- I will be exhibiting some of my work and teaching a few workshops at the Pingry School in Martinsville, NJ. The show will be in the gallery at the Hostetter Arts Center from November 9- December 19, 2007. There will be a reception on Friday November 9th from 2:15- 3:15pm.
10/2007 - I just finished my residency at "The Barn" In Westford, VT, run by the Seven Below Arts Initiative. What an amazing place. Thanks to Anna Schachte, Carlos Ferguson, and Lars Erik Fisk for a great 2 months.
I was able to do a lot of new work in one of my favorite places in the world, Vermont. Thanks also to Burlington City Arts and Trey Anastasio.
